New Product Extends Wireless Presentation Capabilities from 50 up to 500 Feet Using CAT 5 Installed Cable

New KVM-500™ Console Extender System from Wireless Computing Inc. brings the freedom of wide-area movement to professional presentation environments.

ANAHEIM, CA - June 15, 2000 - Wireless Computing, Inc., manufacturers of cutting-edge wireless computer peripherals, has announced the introduction and shipment of its newest product - the KVM-500™ - today at INFOCOMM 2000. The KVM-500™ Extender allows access to computer systems from remote keyboard/monitor/mouse consoles products - including the company's critically acclaimed Wireless SurfBoard™ and Wireless SurfMouse™ products - at distances of up 500 feet, for the very first time.

The KVM-500™ Extender introduces a capability whereby truly wireless presentations can be made in unusually large, open, or even outdoor environments, such as factory and construction sites. (In this type of scenario, consoles must be kept in a conveniently accessible location, but the system must reside in a safe or dust-free environment.)

Rather than using the old way to extend keyboard, video and mouse - which was to use extra-thick cables such as those used on one's desktop keyboard and mouse - this new generation of extenders uses CAT5, copper wiring, which is thinner and cheaper and often already installed in the building, according to Wireless Computing president Martin Phillips.

"Rather than let presenters only be wireless 'up to a point,' which made no sense to us, our answer to the annoyance problem of bulky extension cable was to move the receiver within 50 feet of the keyboard, but up to 500 feet from the computer, using the KVM-500," Mr Phillips said, "especially since CAT5 copper wiring currently is the most popular media for LANs, and has become quite ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive," he added.

MARKET NEED

"We've added the KVM-500 to our line in response to frequent inquiries from our dealers, whose customers wanted to use one of our wireless keyboards but who needed more than the standard 50 feet of range our systems provide," noted Mr Phillips. "The resellers to whom we've explained this new product to have been quite pleased, as it helps them solve many customer presentation problems," he added.

The KVM-500 provides the ideal means to access a remote system box, using the principal of extending reach to wireless receivers used with the company's products by keeping the receiver within 50 feet of the wireless keyboard and/or mouse, but extending its capabilities remotely, through the CAT 5 network or building wiring.

The KVM-500 also is useful for control and security reasons, since computer CPUs and other intelligent systems can be within a secure area, away from audience interference, in a location that offers convenient access to presentation support personnel.

The KVM-500 is available now through the company's international network of audio/visual resellers at a suggested retail price of US$499.

In a corporate environment, the Wireless SurfBoard provides complete keyboard and mouse control for people operating a computer in front of an audience. Using it, business presenters can operate the computer from anywhere in the room, rather than being anchored to the PC. At home, the Wireless SurfBoard can be used on computers equipped to display their output on televisions or other large-screen display devices. The product is available at the U.S. suggested retail price of US$399.

The company also recently introduced the USB-25™, a PS/2-to-USB-port keyboard/mouse adapter that enables Macintosh® users access to the company's premium presentation products - including its critically acclaimed Wireless SurfBoard™ and Wireless SurfMouse™ - for the first time, at a suggested retail price of US$99.
