Nothing happens when I plug in the receiver
Make sure that your computer is running Windows 98SE (Second Edition) or 2000/XP/2003. To determine the Windows version, do the following:
- Click on the Start menu.
- Click on the Control Panel menu item in the Settings menu.
- Double-click on the System control panel item.
- If you are running Windows 98SE it will say Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition.
If the computer is running Windows 98 and not 98SE, you will need to install the Windows 98 Second Edition Update.
Make sure that USB has been enabled for the computer. Refer to the computer's instructions for information about enabling USB on the computer.
Some dialogs came up when I plug in the receiver, but it doesn't work.
USB input devices (keyboards and mice) use drivers that Windows creates the first time you plug in the device. When Windows creates the drivers, it displays a series of dialogs in case there are 'special' drivers provided by the device manufacturer. Wireless Computing devices do not require special drivers to operation properly under Windows.
When the receiver is first plugged in, Windows will build three drivers. The first is a composite device. This is the container that allow the Wireless Computing USB reciever to work with both a keyboard and mouse using only one USB port. The second and third devices are the keyboard and mouse. When Windows creates the drivers for the keyboard and mouse, it will display a series of dialogs. It is critical that you allow each dialog to display fully and select the default button in each dialog. If you do not, Windows will not properly install the Wireless Computing USB receiver.
NOTE: If Windows has never created USB device driver, it may request that you insert the Windows installation CD-ROM. If Windows requests the CD-ROM, you MUST provide it or the USB drivers will not be created.
NOTE: If you are using Windows 2000/XP/2003 you will need to be logged in as the administrator in order for the USB drivers to be created. If you are not logged in as the administrator, the USB installation will fail.
If the USB receiver has not properly installed, you should take the following steps:
- Make sure the Wireless Computing USB receiver is plugged into the computer.
- Click on the Start menu.
- Click on the Control Panel menu item in the Settings menu.
- Double-click on the System control panel item.
- Click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the System Properties dialog.
- Click on the View devices by type just below the tabs.
- Click on the + next to the Keyboard item.
- If there is an entry HID-compliant keyboard, click on the entry and click the Remove button at the bottom of the dialog.
- Click on the + next to the Mouse item.
- If there is an entry HID-compliant mouse, click on the entry and click the Remove button at the bottom of the dialog.
- Click on the + next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers item.
- If there is an entry USB Composite Device, click on the entry and click the Remove button at the bottom of the dialog.
- Unplug the Wireless Computing USB receiver.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug the Wireless Computing USB receiver into the computer.
Windows should now begin the process of creating drivers for the Wireless Computing USB receiver. Allow each dialog to display completely and click on the default button for each. Be sure to have the Windows installation CD-ROM on hand in case it is requested by the operating system.
NOTE: Windows will create drivers for each USB port a device is plugged into, but will only build the drivers the first time a device is plugged into a USB port.
